Manastir Ostrog - April 2006.g.

[Flag of Montenegro] Visoko u stjenovitom planinskom masivu, cesto zaklonjen oblacima i maglom, nalazi se Manastir Ostrog najvece crnogorsko svetiliste, podignuto u sedamnaestom vijeku.

High up in a rocky mountain range, often hidden by clouds and mist, is the Monastery of Ostrog,  the greatest Montenegrin shrine. It was built in seventeenth century. This is the place where the relics of Saint Vasilije Ostroski are resting. Saint Vasilije Ostroski watches us during our whole life and waits for us to return one day to our essence. One German prince had written in 1908 “Ostrog is not only the holy place of the Orthodox, but response of all the world religions”.

Ostrog is famous from the time it was built not only as a holy place but as a center for the movements and actions against the Turks.  That was the reason why the Turks were so persistent to occupy and destroy it, especially by the end of 1852 and the beginning of 1853, during the first attack of Omer-pasha Latas on Montenegro.  The relics of St Vasilije had to be transferred two times, from the fear that the Turks might destroy them, in 1853 and 1876-1878.

[Flag of Montenegro] Manastir ima dvije crkve.

The monastery has two churches. The Upper Church, built in a cave, was constructed in 1665. The wall paintings in the Upper Church, from the same period, are attributed to the artist Radul. The Lower Church dates from the 18th century. Among its treasures, the Church owns a prayer book (Mineon) from 1732 and decorated candlesticks from 1779.

[Flag of Montenegro] Klima je veoma prijatna, sa najmanjom razlikom izmedju zimske i ljetnje temperature, bez obzira sto je nadmorska visina 900 metara. Odavde se pruža prelijep pogled na rijeku Zetu i na njenu njeznu i zelenu okolinu.

The climate is very pleasant here, with the smallest difference between winter and summer temperatures , even though the height above sea level is 900 meters. From here there is a beautiful view of the Zeta river, and its gentle and green surroundings

Do not go by car to the Upper Monastery, you should go on foot, like the humblest pilgrim. The old monk will tell you about the history of all the miracles that have happened in the monastery. Both the poor and the rich come here from everywhere in search of a cure for their bodies and soul.
